Course Syllabus
This course utilizes the nursing process with application to the adult client experiencing medical and surgical health complications and abnormal health states. Emphasis is placed on a comprehensive health assessment, metabolic and regulatory mechanisms of the brain, liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, ingestive and digestive abnormalities, fluid and electrolyte imbalances, the endocrine and the renal system and eye and ear abnormalities and diseases. This course also focuses on neurological dysfunctions and infectious communicable diseases and the characteristics of the older population and normal aging. Focus areas will cover factors that influence dysfunctions and medical management to include effective communication, the nursing process, utilization of a comprehensive health assessment to collect data and the nurse's role, to assist the nurse in factoring in cultural differences and normal aging. Concurrent clinical experience is provided in acute care, long-term care and community agency settings.

Academic SupportIn addition to contacting your Professors for the course. The Division of Academic Counseling provides assistance and support for all students. Technology Statement for SyllabiGulf Coast State College and the Associate Degree Nursing Program encourages use of personal technology (e.g., laptops, iPads, and cell phones to enhance learning and instruction in a variety of ways. However, texting and other uses of technology for non-class related activities should be reserved for class break times. (See your A.D.N. student handbook for further information.) In addition, there WILL NOT be any recording or videoing of lectures or skills lab at any time, it is strictly prohibited, this includes any and all technology capable of recording and/or videoing, i.e. smart watches, phone apps, etc. This will be grounds for dismissal from the program. (See Student A.D.N. handbook for further information.) There will be lectures accessible to you within canvas that you may download to your iPod, MP3, Phone, etc., However, the audio and/or video recordings may be used for your individual learning, but cannot be distributed to others without the explicit permission of the instructor permission.
